When Should I Call 9-1-1?
When concerned for the safety of yourself or others, CALL 9-1-1!
Reasons to call may include reports of:
- Any emergency where life or property is in immediate danger
- An injury requiring immediate medical attention
- A fire (not a controlled burn)
- A crime in progress (occurring now or minutes ago, not hours)
- A serious traffic accident
- A violent dog has attacked a person (not just running at large)
- A driver is dangerously swerving on the road
- If you call 9-1-1 to report a non-emergency, you will be given a non-emergency number to call.
If it's not an emergency, use the non-emergency number!
Misuse of 9-1-1 is a class A misdemeanor, which is the most acute of all Oregon misdemeanors. Class A misdemeanors are punishable by up to one year in a county jail or a maximum fine up to sixty-two hundred fifty dollars. See ORS 165.570 https://www.oregonlaws.org/ors/165.570
